Visa requirements for Australian citizens

Visa requirements for Australian citizens are administrative entry restrictions by the authorities of other states placed on citizens of Australian citizens entering with an Australian passport.
In February 2016 holders of an Australian passport can visit 169 countries and territories visa-free or with visa on arrival, and Australia is currently ranked 8th in terms of travel freedom, ranked behind Greece and New Zealand (7th placing, 171 countries) but above Malta (9th placing, 168 countries) according to the Visa Restrictions Index.^[1]
Besides visa requirements, most countries specify other requirements which may preclude the entry of Australian and other citizens into their country, for example a prospective entrant has a criminal history, or health issues, evidence of sufficient funds, evidence of ticket for exit, etc.

Each country has a multitude of visa types, each with its particular purpose and requirements. Rules for short visits by ordinary passport holders are as follows:
